My school has been providing a quality education to children of a 99% African American, low income, community for the past 15 years. We strive to push our students to succeed and in these tough economic times, resources become scarce.
Our students are eager for success.
They take on AP classes and are always up for an academic challenge. Many of our students face temptations from the outside community, however, they maintain focus and determination to succeed. Living in a community where violence and gangs are everywhere, it is great that our students realize that school is their ticket out of the neighborhood.
My Project
Teaching African America history, a map like this will allow my students to visualize the role that the entire world, especially the areas around the Atlantic, played a role in the history of African American in this country. It will also allow students to visualize the role that the United States plays in the world.
Studies have shown that many Americans lack basic geographical understanding and when asked to find many countries on a map they would not be able to do so.
It would be great to combat these statistics by giving my students access to a giant map that makes geography more accessible and interesting.
