My students need individual carpet circles, stability discs, jumbo tennis balls, giant bowling, ball scoop games, Giant Jenga, 4-to-Score Game, Bocce ball set, Poly Spot Markers, and a set of speakers for our classroom.
Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and remember. Involve me and I learn." Students need to be involved in their learning so that they can take ownership of what they are doing. Students need to get their hands "dirty" by using them to research, create and make learning meaningful. I will teach about 22 eager, energetic 3rd grade students in my classroom this year. We are a Title I school with 100% participation in the reduced price/free lunch program. Many of our students have never left the community nor experienced anything outside of the area.
All of our students are eager to learn and need experiences that they do not get at home.
We do not have much parental involvement at our school and we are looking to change that. We want parents to associate school with love, learning and caring. We would like to change parents' points-of-view from the negative experiences they may have had as a child, to be able to see the positive experiences we provide their children.
My Project
Oddly enough, before we went on summer break, I asked my children what kind of activities they would like to see on the recess yard, and what supplies they believed we needed for Physical Education.
My students were so helpful in giving realistic suggestions (we all know kids can get carried away sometimes)!
I gave different groups of students a task to think of certain types of items.
My students who suggested ball scoop games, bocce ball and jumbo tennis balls explained how the items will teach them how to catch and throw. It will keep them moving and chasing balls as they are learning how to use the games. The giant tennis balls can we used for kick ball and soccer. From a teacher standpoint, Having the scoop ball games and jumbo tennis ball would help help their their coordination and large muscle development. I introduced this group to a new activity called bocce ball.
A number of my students wanted more options for alternative seating, as not everyone like to use wobble chairs we have. When I asked how we could do this in the classroom, they suggested individual rugs and spot markers for students to have a personal space and stability cushions, so students could still sit at their desks and still have the freedom to move. This group also asked for a new set of speakers for our room, because our speakers have been
My next group, was tasked with thinking outside the box. They wanted larger items to keep them active. After research, they decided on Giant Jenga, Giant Dominoes, 4-to-score and giant bowling. They shared that moving and playing these jumbo games would take their whole body. Moving the items from place to place; pushing the large bowling ball in different directions.
