My Project
Amana Academy is a Title 1, STEM certified, public charter school serving Fulton County students in grades K-8. While we have a robust social studies program in Grades 4-8, the lower elementary students do not have access to globes, maps, books about the continents, or current information on indigenous Americans.
Our aim is to prepare these students for the rigorous instruction starting in fourth grade.
Unfortunately, right now, many of our incoming fourth graders do not know where America is on the map, nor can they locate the state of Georgia. They lack any true understanding of contemporary Native communities, the contributions of Native people, and the value that knowing indigenous ways can bring to the study of the sciences.
This coming year our K-3 teachers have requested additional resources to assist them in building excitement around these topics. With your help, we can prepare over 400 students for upper elementary social studies topics such as Westward Expansion and Indian Removal, the military contributions of the Navajo Code Talkers, and the rise of the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (an Alaskan Native owned company) as a major NASA contractor.
