While we supplied new bookcases and book carts, you filled them with mysteries, graphic novels, unicorn stories, fairy tales, and so much more! Our upper elementary students have been begging for new books and we delivered on those requests this semester!\r\n\r\nI wish I had photos of all the collections in all the rooms! Every time I see one of the books out in the \"wild\" in the hands of a student such as at carpool, in the lunchroom, or during recess, it thrills me. Our next round of book chats is coming in just a few short weeks!\r\n\r\nBecause of your generous contributions, we were able to fund a brand new book nook in the kindergarten wing! Beautiful dark wood bookcases, at just the right level for little eyes and hands, are filled with picture books and easy readers that YOU provided! Our special nook is made extra cozy by the addition of a cushioned reading chair for the adults who come to read to our students and a large carpet for the seated students. Located close to the Kindergarten restrooms this space allows students to select books after visiting the restroom (and washing their hands!). \r\n\r\nAs you can see from the photos, when the students finish, there's definitely a lot of space on the shelves! We have 72 Kindergarteners this year which means that our new books are circulating constantly. Students gain so much practice reading these early readers and picture books that they feel more comfortable reading to and with their special adults during our book chats. Our First Grade team is also enjoying this space when their classes are in the area.\r\n\r\nWe could never have made this happen without your support. Our Kindergarteners needed new books to reinvigorate their love of reading. Even more importantly, they needed decodable books which aligned to our curriculum and the Science of Reading approach. While some students are just learning their letter sounds, many of our Kindergarteners were ready for these decodables. Kindergarten is always such a mix of reading levels that we really did need this variety. This year we were looking to roll out improved classroom libraries to our early readers in Grades 1-2. Why? In part because of the success we have found with using a Science of Reading-based curriculum that is promoting gains in literacy across these grades. In part because our students do not have ready access to reading materials at home and many are not familiar with the public library system. As a Title 1 school, our students face hurdles with transportation to libraries and, in this uncertain economic times, buying books even at thrift stores can feel like a luxury. As a result, we committed to enhancing the collections in each of the eight classrooms with new books and new bookshelves. \r\n\r\nOur teachers returned in July just in time to see the libraries delivered! In the First Grade classrooms, teachers were treated to new blue \"browse carts\" on wheels which allow for more flexibility when arranging a classroom for the littlest learners. We contributed the browse carts because YOU funded the book collections. Your generosity also meant new bookcases in Second Grade plus clear bins! When donors and schools work together, our funding can go a lot further!\r\n\r\nCheck out these adorable libraries! I especially like the photo of our First Grade teachers posing with the new Elephant and Piggie bookends that came as a bonus \"thank you\" when we ordered from one of the vendors! Your gift has made a huge difference in our classroom.\r\n\r\nMany of my students are still developing their fine motor skills and are in the process of learning how to properly grip and hold their writing and coloring tools. The chubby crayons are the perfect size for their small hands, providing them with a great opportunity to practice these essential skills.\r\n\r\nThe crayons have also been a lifesaver because they are much more durable! As students are still learning to control the pressure of their grip, we've had a lot of broken crayons in the past. Your donation has allowed us to have a full set of crayons ready for our daily activities without the constant worry of them breaking. We use them every day in our learning centers for coloring and all sorts of creative activities.","fullyFundedDate":1744033014329,"projectUrl":"project/building-fine-motor-skills-and-color-rec/9230423/","projectTitle":"Building Fine Motor Skills and Color Recognition with Chubby Crayons","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Dowd","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp233453_orig.jpg?crop=743,743,x101,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733273096287","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/dowdfirst"},{"teacherId":233453,"projectId":9022557,"letterContent":"I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your generous donation of the math centers. In particular, the calendar math station has become a huge hit! I use it every day to explore and solidify my students' understanding of place value, equations, and word problems. It's also been invaluable for teaching essential calendar skills.\r\n\r\nThe hands-on nature of the centers has sparked a real enthusiasm for math in my classroom.
