Our school serves students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from city hall. Civic students from many areas of the city are identified when they experience difficulty, allowing the focus to be on intervention rather than remediation.
For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate. In 2014, we established the first library and are including popular urban lit, graphic novels, and books about the justice system.
Leo asked to check out the large box of chess from the library. And then he suggested we should have mini sets for students to check out. He also mentioned some other giant games like Jenga. I suggested he think about games for the library and then he could write a student led grant. He asked Trevor to be part of his planning team. They are very interested in writing the grant, organizing the new games and books, and getting everything ready to be checked out of the library! Then they are planning to let all the classes know about new library games with posters AND an all school announcement.
In Their Own Words
Leo-We need lots of new games in our library. Kids can check out miniature chess and take it home to play just like a book.
Trevor- With games kids can be entertained and not be so bored. Kids be stressing so much at home so they can relax at school.
Leo- I will organize the games and get them ready for check out of the library. We will both let everyone know about the new games and books in the library. Kids will like BIG Jenga and there will be more activity at school and not boring. We will make posters about these relaxing games.
Leo-If we get these games and books I will come to school more often because we will have these new activities in the library. And we can check out the games and books, too.
Trevor-I will take care of the games and teach other kids the rules. We will let everyone know about all the stuff we got from writing this grant.
