In recent years, contemporary art has continued to explore cross-over between the performative and the visual, between the individual experience and the collective voice, between the grotesque and the absurd. Our Visual Art classes are engaging these themes through puppetry.
From various neighborhoods, walks of life and of many different passions come my students.
Some identify staunchly as artists, and some just value the artistic practice as a part of daily life. We are a diverse public school (ethnically, culturally, and economically). Our students are curious, conscientious, talented, compassionate and just plain weird. Our school embraces difference especially because of our unique program for students with special learning differences. Most importantly, our students are fabulous teens who love challenging the norm.
My Project
The fabric and liquid watercolors we are asking your help to purchase will become the costume for the larger-than-life street puppets we've created. We began by watching the famous Bread & Puppet theater performances online and by looking at creepy characters in film. We considered how we might disturb the audience at our Spring Arts Assembly in May.
We made larger-than-life paper mache masks and hands. We are currently painting them. Next, we will make the wooden skeletal structures and costume. We can use reclaimed wood for the structure, but large amounts of fabric and dyes are expensive. With help, we can make fabulous costumes for our disturbing characters to perform on stage. We will be learning how fabric and motion can be manipulated to suggest form that is alive and mobile. We will also be learning pattern and sewing techniques and textile design.
Donating to our class project will give students materials that are beyond our regular budget.
We have a big vision for this project, as it is large in scale, is technically challenging, is collaborative, and engages the community. We would like to look back at the end of the year with pride that we took on a new challenge and that our entire community was able to experience it.
