This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My fifth-grade students are diving into Wait Till Helen Comes, a suspenseful ghost story that’s perfect for sparking imagination and building a love for reading. Many of my students are just beginning to explore chapter books independently, and this novel offers the perfect mix of mystery and excitement to keep them turning the pages. Through our class reading, discussions, and creative writing activities, students will be inspired to craft their own narrative fiction stories. With your support, I can provide each student with their own copy of the book that will inspire them to bring their own spooky stories to life!

I teach an amazing group of fifth graders who are curious, creative, and full of imagination.

Many of them are just starting to feel confident with chapter books and are eager to explore stories that challenge their thinking and ignite their creativity. Our classroom is a space where students are encouraged to take risks, ask questions, and express themselves through reading and writing. For some, books are an escape; for others, they are a new adventure waiting to be discovered. My goal is to nurture a love of reading while helping students develop their voice as writers.

This project centers around the novel Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn—a suspenseful ghost story that captivates readers from the very first page. With its spooky setting and relatable characters, the book is the perfect bridge for students transitioning into longer, more complex chapter books.

Each student will receive their own copy of the novel so we can read together as a class, hold meaningful discussions, and explore literary elements like mood, character development, and theme. As we read, students will use the book as a springboard for writing their own narrative fiction stories.
