My Students
Students are always curious what other students are doing. This curiosity presents a great opportunity for many teachable moments. Using students' work to demonstrate what to do and what not to do can be a very powerful practice.
I will have a group of 25 second grade students, at at neighborhood school in Chicago.
There is a Promethean Board (interactive white board) in my classroom. Our school's mission it is to provide a safe and supportive community, where students can work together to develop and advance the knowledge of their world.
Working together is a cornerstone of our classroom. Students will receive peer feedback on many things they do, along with teacher feedback. Learning is a reciprocal process. Without people around you giving you what you need to grow, it does not happen nearly as quickly. This reciprocal process is the way in which we build a great community of learners.
My Project
Using iPads to show students' work is a very powerful practice. Imagine seeing your story on a large interactive whiteboard. Next, imagine your classmates being able to annotate on your paper electronically. How powerful is that?
Since there is an interactive whiteboard in my classroom, it presents a great opportunity for screen sharing. With specific software (AirServer), the screen on the iPad can be shared on the Promethean Board for the whole class to see. Not only can you show students work, I can also access the Internet from all over the classroom. The iPad would allow me to walk around my classroom and still access and show students work and other features, like the Internet and timers to keep students on track, without having to walk up to the board. Not only would it save me the time and hassle of walking up to the board, but also it would allow me more time with my students.
With the ability to receive quick feedback on their work from their peers and the amount of time I will save by not having to go to the interactive whiteboard as frequently, students will be able to stay on track and focused.
They will clear up conceptions more quickly (especially when work shown is a common student error). They will get more feedback from their teacher, because he will not have to use his time going to the interactive whiteboard as frequently.
