Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students connect to the twenty-first century and be able to utilize modern technology to investigate scientific materials and illustrate their data efficiently in high level presentations.

I teach in a charter school located in California.

The majority of my students are Socially Economically Disadvantaged, minorities with the goal to make a difference and attend a college or university. The larger part of my students will be the first in their families to go to college. Being mostly underrepresented in science degree programs and science professions, it is important to me to ensure that all my students can get as much exposure to science and technology as possible. Given the situation my students live in, they are not exposed much to science or technology at home or in their community and it is up to me to make sure that their experience is exciting enough for them to be interested in pursuing some kind of science, engineering, technology, or math profession. I am confident that every year, with more and more exposure to different technologies and through hands-on, inquiry activities my students will succeed and enter the science and engineering fields.

My Project

Talking about what is available is nothing compared to being able to see and use the technology. Given the exposure to various forms of technology, such as a document camera, my students will be able to explore the use of a tool that they would only read about. The versatility of the document camera leads itself to be able to help students analyze different specimens, take the image, enlarge it, view it as a group at a station or as a class, and many more applications that can foster the enthusiasm for science and engineering.

With the majority of my students being Socially Economically Disadvantaged and underrepresented minorities, it is important to me that they are able to have the ability to find science worthwhile by having exposure to technology in the classroom.

With motivation and enthusiasm for science and engineering, achievement increases and so does the potential for students to become professionals in science, engineering, technology, or mathematics.
