Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Movement is the theme in my Physical Education classroom. I want to help my students obtain the healthy fitness goals for their gender and age by the end of the year. With PE classes of 60 or higher in each class it is difficult to provide multiple meaningful movement choices.
The students at our large inner city high school are typical teenagers who are used to being tied to technology.
Most of them come from homes where English is the second language. Our school is an older school which is in great need of renovation. Our Physical Education program is no exception. Our space is limited which requires that we carefully plan for safe but stimulating activities. The Physical Education teacher must share equipment and space. Many of my students have not been exposed to positive movement experiences. They are not aware of the tremendous impact that the body has on the mind and academics.
My Project
If we were able to obtain the fitness equipment we request we would be able to get more students moving during physical education class. The equipment is the type that is easily transported from location to location. Teachers would be able to move the equipment from the fitness room to the gym and outside in order to allow students continued access. The circuit stations can be set up in any of the locations in order for teachers to provide instruction and activities which will help students move toward their health fitness goals. They will be able to experience the positive impact that movement can have on their life. They will also be able to begin to understand how they can bring fitness into their own lives outside the school setting.
I have found through 29 years of teaching that students truly appreciate when they are given meaningful experiences.
They may be a little resistant to new experiences but when they see that their teachers are dedicated and that outside sources provided their equipment they realize the importance of what their teachers and community are trying to do for them. The positive difference may only be seen by the teacher at the outset, but the positive long-lasting effect is eventually felt.
