Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Pablo Picasso once said "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." In order to hold onto their creative spark, our budding artists need as much exposure as possible to various art forms and and famous artists.
Each week I teach 700 students, kindergarten through eighth grade, who are eager to express their creativity and try out new and exciting art forms.
My students, largely first and second generation Americans, are growing up in a large urban school district, whose budget cuts resulted in the suspension of our school's Art program for many years.
Despite its being run out of a lunchroom, our one-year-old Art program has already seen fantastic results. From September to June, the walls of our school were covered with beautiful pieces that make students and families proud.
My Project
Art history is an integral piece of art education that with the right materials can be taught at any grade level. My students have not yet had the chance to create personal connections to artists the world has looked up through over the course of time.
I believe each student should have the opportunity to learn about an artist "just like them." Learning about Dorthea Lang's life and inspiration adds an additional layer to students understanding of her artwork, as well as provides an example of how to tie ones own life experiences to art.
While many consider Art History to be a complex and dense subject, with the appropriate materials and resources - all of my students, regardless of their background and reading levels, will be able to access these important teachable moments. This set of illustrated classroom books will be used for interactive read-alouds that connect to current projects, to search for personal inspiration, and to gather information for artists reports
By supporting this project, you will be providing little (and big) artists with a path to connect with famous artists and look to history as well as their own lives as a source of inspiration!
