Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a cohort of a Spanish Immersion Program. They have experienced an educational career where Spanish is the medium of education for part of their day. I currently teach the third and fourth groups to go through the cohort. The hope is for the students to continue with the program all the way through high school and for them to be eligible to earn a seal of bi-literacy. To reach that goal I am trying to bring a rich and diverse literature that can speak to our common experiences in the United States and to present different perspectives of reality.
To reflect on and study ancestral practices from our indigenous relatives and ancestors in the classroom will help all of us understand and build a healthy identity embracing all of our complexities in a multiracial world.
Using literature can assist us teachers and students to help center the conversation on topics and characters that will help make our society more inclusive. It is with this intention that I will use this site to help us start a collection of titles in Spanish that can help facilitate discussions about this important topic.
My Project
Reading and writing is always a challenge, I have found that many students in middle school are struggling with personal and interpersonal relationships. Some have said "I don't know what I'm supposed to say". Even though we engage with material from different perspectives they yet do not know their own perspective.
It is difficult to ask our students to engage in transformative education that requires critical consciousness, at a time in their lives when they don't yet know themselves.
The Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz will help them look inward and fortify their hearts to help them develop their identity in a healthy ways. This book will help students broaden their worldview and consider other's perspectives.
