This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a first year science teacher, starting my career at 49 years of age. I was shocked to find that my classroom is empty! I am able to get a VERY limited number of items from the office. However, the items that I really need to bring science to life, I have to purchase out of pocket.

I teach for a middle school in Arizona.

The students in this area are mainly from poor homes. All students receive free or reduced lunches. Most of my student's live in homes where parents did not attend college. Most did not finish high school. When talking with these students, many seem to have resigned themselves to living in our town and working in the fields, as their parents do. Very few have hopes of going to college and making a better life for themselves. My students just need the opportunity to be excited about something that fascinates them. And nothing is more fascinating than SCIENCE!

My Project

I would love my students to be as excited about science as I am. This is hard to do without the basic supplies they need to do labs in the classroom. Books are great, lecture is fantastic. However, I want students to be able to create, explore, and collaborate on exciting projects! Science is something that should be experienced in a way that makes a person want to discover more about the world around them. My students know very little about the world around them. I want to expose all of my students to SCIENCE in a way that makes it stick! The supplies that I am hoping to receive, are basic supplies that I will use to create MANY different projects in our room.

I feel it is imperative that students PARTICIPATE in class!

These supplies will allow them to create Planet Flip Books, Biome Posters, Ecology Comic Books, Earth Layer Drawings, and so much more. Middle School is a critical point in a child's life. This is where a teacher is able to excite students about going to high school. I want to challenge my students and prepare them for high school, life, and a career, possibly in science.
