Getting STEMmy With It! Vibrant Mural for Hybrid Math Learning

Help me give my students an awesome, hybrid learning experience of women in STEM by providing a webcam and art materials for our classroom mural.

My Students

I teach eighth-grade students who are in many ways typical middle schoolers: playful, curious, and anxious about the future. Our International Baccalaureate Middle School, is full of young people with varied backgrounds and interests, yet more than half of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

One of the things I enjoy most about my students is their capacity to care about each other and the world around them.

My students show me every day that they don't care how much I know, until they know how much I care about them. One of my great joys as a teacher is getting to know and care for my students.

My Project

Research reveals that most K-12 students do not see people that look like them among STEM professionals. The primary goal of this project is to provide an opportunity for students to see and learn about women and minorities who are enjoying successful STEM careers. Students will benefit from a classroom visual aide and planned discussions designed to specifically enhance student understanding of STEM and ability to identify with STEM workers.

The art materials and webcam this project will fund will assist in making one side of our classroom an exciting and vibrant mural featuring Women in STEM as found in the If/Then catalog.

As the classroom teacher, I will use the mural as a weekly discussion starter to focus on specific STEM careers. Students watching in from home, as well as students at school will see and learn about, on a frequent basis, a multi-ethnic range of women involved in a variety of STEM careers.
