Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a wonderfully diverse group. We have representatives from many cultures, languages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic status. We are a title I school.
My students love to play, and historically we haven't had enough after-school sports equipment for them to use.
Budget cuts have been detrimental to after-school sports programs throughout our nation.
We have reused equipment until they no longer function. Getting equipment removes a barrier in running these free after-school sports programs. If we can get more equipment, we will have more active and fit students playing sports.
My Project
Grades 4-6 students are invited to play in the annual elementary Newark Cup, where they compete against other elementary schools in town. Volunteers coaches from the community develop these students into soccer players. Due to these volunteers and the generosity of the Newark Soccer Club, students can participate in the Newark Cup for free. For many, this can be their only exposure to an extra-curricular sport.
We need soccer balls and goalie gloves to field our team.
If we get enough equipment, our students will get more touches and develop their soccer skills. Students learn to be part of a team and can develop life-long fitness habits.
