Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In order for students to become successful learners and educated citizens, they must learn how to use nonfiction materials to make decisions, solve problems, & gain knowledge. It is important that my students have age appropriate, quality, nonfiction texts at their reading level.
I will be teaching reading to three classes of fourth graders.
About 30% of the students in our school have at least one parent in the military and about 45% of the student population is economically disadvantaged, has special needs, and/or is at risk of failure. Many of my students do not like reading and come from families of non-readers. They see reading as a chore or punishment. A lot of students do not have a variety of reading resources or even books at home to read and no way to get to the public library. I want to provide my students with age appropriate, quality, nonfiction texts at their reading level. My students need to be exposed to a variety of nonfiction texts and I hope to do that for them.
My Project
Scholastic News weekly magazine helps the reader build reading skills that are specific to the fourth grade. Scholastic News is a powerful cross-curricular teaching tool with features like maps, graphs, and test-prep quizzes that my students have not been consistently exposed to. Scholastic News subscriptions will get my students excited by including comprehensive online resources that complement and enhance the print lessons, with videos, skills sheets, and even interactive games.
Storyworks magazine will engage students with the widest variety of genres in one magazine! In every issue of Storyworks, my students will find narrative nonfiction, original fiction, plays, paired texts, poetry, and much more. Having these resources available to my students will excite my students so much they won't be able to wait until the next issue comes in!
My hope with this project is that my students will be excited about reading and staying up to date on current evens.
I want to provide my students with a variety of literary genres. As stated above, in order for my students to become successful learners and educated citizens, they must learn how to use nonfiction materials to make decisions, solve problems, and gain knowledge and I can do this with these awesome Scholastic resources.
