Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help my Kindergarten students get ready to read! I teach the English component Kindergarten class in a dual language school in an urban city in CT. The students in my classroom come from homes in which they are not exposed to spoken or written language. Many of them have never gotten a chance to look at a book. At our school, we give the students a solid foundation by teaching them to read in their dominant language spoken at home and then exposing them to the secondary language.
Because my students are getting their first experiences with language in my classroom, they need to be provided with many opportunities and materials to listen to letter sounds and manipulate sounds in words.
If my students had materials such as rhyming books, sound sorts, and letter sound manipulatives to help them learn letter sounds and refine their phonemic awareness skills, they can be exposed to language and get better prepared to be good readers.
Your help will ensure that my students have the opportunity to become good readers. Having these materials will give them the chance to practice manipulating sounds and putting sounds together to make and read words.
