My elementary school is in central Florida. My students are five and six year old children that are beginning their formal education. They are enthusiastic to be at school and embrace very new task and skill that is introduced to them. They like to sing, play in centers, and learn all about reading and math.
We are a Title I school.
We have about 93 percent of our students that receive free or reduced-rate lunches. Most come from homes with single parents, a grandparent, or other family members are raising them. The saddest situations are where the students are in a homeless situation.
My Project
My classroom theme has been Pete the Cat for the last few years. Pete the Cat is a wonderful storybook character that is positive and easy going. His books usually have a good story for my young children to enjoy with an adult or on their own in the library center. There are several new books that would be perfect to add to our Pete the Cat collection.
My kindergarten children love the stickers, computer paper for folders, nameplates, and name tags that are used to decorate their folders and tables.
These items are disposable and need replacing every school year.
I use the question: "What would Pete do?" for tidying up the classroom and doing classroom jobs. Our classroom vacuum cleaner needs replacing. The children love to do their assigned Pete job of vacuuming. It is one of the most requested jobs other than line leader! For quick clean ups at the end of the day, we need a vacuum to clean our whole group learning carpet.
