Getting Past the Basics

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are curious, creative, and ready to explore learning! They are interested in anything you put in front of them. I teach at a Title I school, and most students receive our free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast program. These students do not have as many opportunities as most children in the surrounding area. I am here to challenge them so they can succeed in the world they live in. My class has seven different languages and teaching can be a challenge. But these children are priceless and I wouldn't want to be teaching anywhere else.

My Project

Having basic supplies for the children will enhance their learning. Right now, we are sending a lot of paper packets for writing, cutting, and gluing because kindergarten students need to build their fine motor skills and creativity. They are just beginning to know what their school environment looks like. We want them to know that if they need basic school supplies, our class will furnish them. Many of my students do not have a desk or table to write on and having a clipboard for them to write on makes them feel so successful. I have given the students all my basic supplies from the classroom, so they can have supplies at home. I'm hoping the students will be back soon in the classroom and we'll need replacement materials for the classroom.

Many students in our community deal with a lot of trauma and the last thing I want them to worry about is supplies.

As a teacher, I want them to feel safe and loved so that they can build on their goals for school.
