I teach choir at the middle school level. In our school, sixth through eighth grade students are involved in the school performing arts program. Nearly half our school is involved in the performing arts with many students performing in multiple areas. These ensembles include band, orchestra, choir, drama, and the school musical.
These students are not only learning enjoyable hobbies, but also lifelong skills through the performing arts.
Students learn teamwork and leadership skills through their involvement in music and drama ensembles.
My Project
My students are inspired to perform in small ensembles and learn new styles of music. We already perform a wide variety of traditional and multicultural music as a whole choir, but we are ready to add small groups to our repertoire. We currently have a show choir of 11 students, but students have also expressed an interest in vocal jazz and a capella music.
I am so proud of and excited about my students' desires to perform in small groups and solo.
Our school's jazz band has inspired a love of jazz to flourish and my students are ready to explore vocal jazz. My students also love Pitch Perfect (who doesn't!). And are in awe of a capella pop. This style of music is difficult for middle school choirs to perform, but these students are passionate and hard working and willing to do whatever it takes to pull off Pitch Perfect inspired music.
These books will help us learn more about how to best adapt these styles to the middle school voice and open our musical world to new ears!
