My Students

55 bright-eyed and curious minds come into my classroom every day ready to learn. They are curious about the world around them, experts at asking questions, and desire a place of community and belonging. Spending my days with them makes me a better person!

I work at a school where diversity is the beauty that connects us all.

We are a community of learners who support one another, push each other every day to be our best, and help each other do good in the world. I want my students to achieve their full academic potential each and every day, and learn how to navigate their world around them. Difficulty to focus on instruction can be difficult for some students, therefore anything that can help them to engage and feel safe learning is my goal. With your generous help and the addition of The Walking Classroom curriculum, I know my students will be given another way to understand and learn the curriculum. Kids know they need multiple entry points to learn.

My Project

As teachers, we strive to incorporate all modalities of learning into all our lessons, be creative with our lessons, and allow for students to learn in different ways because we know "one size doesn't fit all." Using the WalkKits from The Walking Classroom, my students will receive the obvious health benefits of walking and getting outside, along with the educational content aligned with our curriculum in another way that supports in-class instruction.

This auditory learning, combined with physical activity, has been shown to improve students' moods, increase focus, and to generate post-walk discussion.

According to teachers' testimonials, who regularly report after implementing The Walking Classroom into their programs, students retain the information better, demonstrate better behavior and engagement in the classroom, and perform better on standardized exams.

Our plan would be to use this class set of WalkKits from Walking Classroom across the fifth grade and across content areas: reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and social-emotional learning. The content could be used as a whole class activity, an alternative modality for make-up work, or a supplement for students needing additional ways to receive academic content.
