My Students
My students are a mix of American families, immigrant families, and refugee families who were forced to leave their country out of fear for their lives. They have come to the U.S. in search of a better life. All my students are curious and resourceful children who come from all over the world, bringing a wealth of cultural and linguistic knowledge.
Our school strives to bring together refugee, immigrant, and local children in an academically challenging and nurturing environment.
Though we have limited resources, we work hard to prepare students both socially and academically.
As a First Grade teacher, I teach them Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science. They teach me about perseverance and the value of diversity.
My Project
My students are industrious, bright, and creative first graders. They enjoy working collaboratively and so we encourage group team work by letting students sit at tables together. This seating arrangement allows us to build community but it makes organizing our classroom materials a challenge. My students need chair pockets to put on the back of their chairs to organize their books and supplies.
The energy of the first graders in my class is wonderful and allows them to learn and grow everyday.
However, sitting still can be hard for 6 and 7 years olds. Having kick bands for student chairs would allow them to better focus by giving students an outlet for their energy.
To differentiate and meet every student's needs, we work in small group stations every day. We need floor lap desks for our classroom computers. We are trying very hard to maximize our space to allow students to focus on learning.
