Help me give my students a class set of binders where they will keep and organize their math notes, allowing them to create a foundation of knowledge that they will build upon for their entire high school career.
Being a small, rural school, we have a wide variety of students who walk through our doors. We have kids who are running the family farm, to kids living in some of the lowest income areas outside of Eugene, Oregon. Regardless of where they come from, one thing you will hear our whole staff say is how we have a lot of good kids. Everyone has their struggles, but our students feel connected with each other and our staff in ways that does not happen in bigger schools. They stick up for each other and have a strong level of respect. We love our students and want them to have limitless experiences.
My Project
When you ask students, and in reality adults, what their least favorite subject is, they often reply, MATH! When asked why, their response usually includes something along the lines of “It’s hard”. Math can be difficult for students, especially for ones who feel like they can never successfully grasp what seems to be the endlessly changing topics in mathematics. Students feel like they are constantly learning new and different concepts but do not realize that often times they are actually just adding a little more information or an extra step, to something that they already know.
With this in mind, I want to be able to create a classroom set of binders where all of my math students will keep their notes during their entire high school math career.
As the Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 teacher, I truly believe that by students being able to look at their work and notes from the past that they can build confidence in the math they are doing in the present. Everyone agrees that math builds on itself and I believe our students' math notes should do the same thing.
These classroom binders and dividers will allow students to organize their math notes alphabetically so they can refer to them quickly, recognize previous and similar topics, and will guarantee that they have them whenever they need during the three or four years that they are enrolled in a math class.
