Getting Lost in the Reading Zone!

Help me give my students authentic, high-interest books to read. Most of the boys want more sports books to read and the girls was more true stories to get lost in.

My Students

The students at WNY Maritime Middle School are the strongest, most amazing people I am privileged to have in my life. Many of the students in my classroom have been moved from school to school throughout their lives due to family changes, discipline records, or not fitting in with their peers. By the time I get them in eighth grade, they have been in and out of no less then four schools. Just waiting to thrive and learn in a safe environment.

No one have given them a chance to speak up for what they believe in, no one has cared about their thoughts thus far, so I strive to listen to their voices.

Their experiences go beyond what I can teach them in my class period. So I use their voices to help build them a class that will make them feel safe, and thrive in an academic world.

My Project

By providing more books in my classroom I am tap into the raw potential of each one of my students. By reading stories of other people like them, my students can translate this into creative writing, TED Talks, projects and overall academic success! I do not have the resources to buy more books each year. But it is my job to surround them with literature and stories.

Books are the escape into a new world, books help us heal, books help us dream and reach for new goals, give my students this opportunity to escape, heal, and reach.

All of us like to get lost in a book, and my students need help to do that. They need books!
