As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and all receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. A majority of students come from multicultural background, speaking a variety of languages and diverse learning approaches.
Despite the many challenges they face, these students come to school ready to learn.
They thrive off of positive feedback and love and enjoy being exposed to new topics. I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences that will stay with them long after they leave my classroom.
My Project
Reading can be challenging for students especially when they are not in the habit of reading independently. However, independent reading is a huge part of learning and strengthening reading and writing skills. My students often struggle to find books that interest them and are relatable to their lives which often discourages them to read. My library is currently limited and through student surveys, I have found books that will pique their interest.
Reading books that are relatable and interesting is a huge part of creating lifelong readers that enjoy getting lost in a good book.
Your donations will help me build my library and help my students find the joy and benefits of reading.
