My Students

I teach music through a grant program that integrates core subjects into the arts. On any given day, I see grades K-6 walk through my classroom, where we explore the world, language, math, and sciences through music.

My school is located in a suburb of SaIt Lake City.

It is new, and the students and teachers have settled and created a thriving school community. I teach the whole school of over 1,100 students every week. They are very eager to learn and enjoy the integrated music lessons. They know that in my class, even if they don't particularly care for music, they will learn something new from a subject they enjoy; whether it is language arts, social studies, math, or science. Everyday they give me fun stories to take home and share, and I look forward to going to work everyday because of them.

My Project

I am in my 4th year of building a music program from the ground up. My students amaze me with how much they grow musically each year. Acquiring new quality resources for them is a never ending challenge, as their skills always seem to exceed my expectations.

The new soprano glockenspiels and soprano xylophone will help meet the needs of a growing program.

Currently, 2nd 3rd, and 4th graders are using orff style xylophones and glockenspiels to learn musical literacy, beat, and rhythm. My kindergarteners also use them for beat and to play simple accompaniments while they sing. As we have limited numbers of the instrument in our classroom, it takes valuable class time to rotate through every student. Ultimately, it is my goal to have one instrument for each child. Currently I am aiming for one instrument for every 2 children.

Students working in partnership become teachers to each other. When one plays, while the other sings. Independent learning happens as the teacher’s role becomes a facilitator of learning while students learn to help each other. They can offer critiques to one another, making class time more efficient as I can help students with more need. We are able to accomplish more in our short time together. Having more instruments as these also makes the feasibility of grade level programs easier, and allows our music program to be more visible to the community.

This grant, if fulfilled, would put our program at ratio of 2:1 ratio allowing our program to grow to its natural potential.
