This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in East Las Vegas. Our classroom motto is “Readers are leaders.” My vision is that students sharpen their leadership skills (The 7 C’s of Leadership: Curiosity, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Craft, Conscience, Community, and Confidence) on the whetstone of great books. As Malcolm X describes in his Autobiography, “People don’t realize how a whole life can be changed by one book.”

In her book The Reading Zone, Nancie Atwell argues that the best way to instill a love of reading—and to improve reading skills—is by “frequent, voluminous, self-selected reading".

In my class, students read every day from a book of their choice. Over the course of a year, they become joyful, enthusiastic readers, completing upwards of 20 books per year and shattering stereotypes that "kids like them" don't read. Nearly 100% of my students report that they have the ability to "Enter the Reading Zone," which is the ability to fully immerse oneself in a book to the degree you feel you are inside it.

Unfortunately, my students read books faster than I can supply them. This is why I need your help!

My Project

I work at a charter school that was founded within the last 3-ish years. Currently, the "library" is a shelf half-filled with secondhand thrift shop books.

I am hoping to raise money to buy 100-or-so books (chosen from the American Library Association's "Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Leaders") to furnish my classroom library.

This library will be crucial in helping me to implement Nancie Atwell's Reading Workshop, which in turn will help create joyful, life-long readers.

Reading researchers like Nancie Atwell, Donalyn Miller, Stephen Krashen, and Alfie Kohn have argued forcefully for allowing students the ability to choose the books they read. The secondhand, throwaway books currently in the library have very little appeal to my students. These selected books, strategically chosen for their proven track-record with reluctant readers, will give my students a wide variety of book choices to begin to develop their own reading preferences and identities as life-long readers.
