Teaching to the test is all too common these days; help me break the cycle! I teach 7th grade English in a high-needs inclusion classroom in the heart of Washington, DC. Our school is in a high poverty area with a large English Language Learner population. My class of 30 is a delicate balance of general education students, students with special needs, and English Language Learners. Our school follows a pre-school through 8th grade model and has just received half of the populations from two schools that were closed.
With standardized test dates looming ever closer, our staff is searching for ways to teach the standards in a meaningful way to students. Our goal is to give the students the in depth knowledge that they need to retain and maintain the content standards for life, not until "pencil's down." After much thought, deliberation, and research we have decided the best way to make these tested standard more meaningful to students is by teaching them within the context of a novel. Unfortunately, we do not have access nor the funds to purchase a class set.
After pondering titles that were meaningful to us and would mean something to our students we all agreed on one book, "The Outsiders." I am requesting a class set (30 copies)of this novel for my students now and future classes to enjoy. The themes in this novel so closely reflect the challenges my students face everyday. Poverty, homelessness, gangs, and abandonment are the reality for many of our youngsters. But there is also a thread of hope. This novel would be an engaging read and one which would allow the introduction and instruction of many tested standards.
With your donation you can help my students get excited about reading. You can help them see that there are books that reflect the challenges they face and find a solution. With your assistance, I can find meaningful ways to teach students all about plot structure and character interaction without it feeling like a chore for them. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal and making a difference in the lives of the youth in our nation's capital.
