This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a coach for a soccer team of newcomer and refugee girls at Castlemont High School located in East Oakland. On top of the everyday struggles that come with being a high school student, the large majority of the girls on the team have only been in the United States for the past 1-3 years. Some of the girls are here with family in which they play a huge role in supporting, while others are here completely alone. At a high school comprised of all minority students where 88% of students are classified as economically disadvantaged, it can be very hard for these girls to enjoy extracurriculars when they carry so much responsibility outside of school.

This soccer team has served as a safe haven for so many girls.

At practices and games, they get to truly be kids, find their identity as athletes, develop leadership skills, have a comfortable place to practice English, and most importantly, have fun. As a free program, Soccer Without Borders coaches are responsible for funding and providing equipment which can be hard to come by. Something as simple as a pair of shinguards or having good quality cones for practices means a lot to these girls. Newcomer and refugee girls often face a struggle of being discouraged to play sports as it is considered to be improper in their culture, in addition to the inequalities that exist in an already male-dominated sports world. For example, my girls team currently shares a practice space simultaneously with the boys soccer team, meaning the boys get equipment priority and the girls don't have proper goals to practice with. Having access to equipment equal to the boys program aids in making the girls realize that they are in fact equal and worthy athletes. Go girls!!
