This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We just finished our 1st 9-weeks of school, and things are chugging along. This is the time of year when some students have learned the routines and are ready to dig deeper into our curriculum, and others have gotten bored with the novelty of school and are looking to be distracted. How do we keep going for long term success, when AVID Excel is a class designed for students who are bilingual and often struggle in school?
Bringing them all back together takes a lot of planning and energy, and physical objects are often a big help.
Bouncy bands are something I've had in my classroom for a while now, and they are starting to snap! Kids have been switching out desks to make sure they sit at a desk with the thick band to bounce their feet against, so getting some more will keep them from losing that time.
Pencils and lead are always needed--even when I check the floor before each class leaves for left-behinds, they will get used up. Microfiber cloths are great for whiteboard erasers for individual games, and colored post-it notes make our daily Ticket out the Door more fun. And headphones are not for listening to music in my class: most of my students take a test for bilingual students that requires them to record their voices on the computer. By practicing all year with the right equipment, they go into the test in the spring confident and prepared, instead of too embarrassed to talk.
Your help in getting all these things helps them keep pushing ahead in a comfortable, supportive environment. We make sure to read, write, listen and speak academic English every class, whether they moved here from another country last month, or have been bilingual their whole lives.
