First grade is the year students are expected to make the most significant progress in learning to read independently, and the best way to accomplish that is by having students read as much as possible! The problem? Sitting alone on a cold, hard floor in the classroom is not very appealing!
In our Waipahu community, reading is not always an option at home, but here in the classroom, it's my students' favorite part of their day.
In class, we implement the Daily 5 center rotations where the class is broken up into groups for our reading block. Students are rotated through read-to-self, work on writing, reading to someone, listening to reading, and word work. My class is made up in large part of English language learners and socioeconomically disadvantaged students, it is crucial to motivate my students to read independently as often as possible, and with the help of the Daily 5, they truly have a love for reading.
