Getting Creative with Clay

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Nestled in a neighborhood on the south side of Phoenix, is a kindergarten through eighth grade school bustling with 550 brand new students. It didn't take long for the art room to become "the place to be" on campus. The students are experiencing art in a way they never have before. They are being taught "Artistic Behavior." Students buzz with excitement on "Art" day because they know when they cross the art studio threshold that will they become self-directed, independent thinkers that create "wow" worthy art! They are the artists and this is their studio!

My students do not have art supplies or technology at home, so their exposure to art and technology relies solely on their experiences at school.

Our students are immigrants and English Language Learners. We are a Title I school in one of the most socioeconomically disadvantaged areas of Phoenix, AZ.

But don't let that fool you! Our K-8 Mustangs are spirited, resilient children that arrive to school eager to learn and create, every single day!

My Project

We all remember that clay project that we made in grade school. It's probably still in your parents house! Clay is one of the most effective and engaging art mediums for children to discover their passion for art and develop their creative skills. Funding our project will allow us to purchase all the clay tools, materials and kiln accessories required to get our clay program running! We just got our kiln working but without these items our program wont be successful.

I want to expose my 550 students to a full year of clay exploration and project making!

We're not just talking about one measly project over here! Clay is always a popular choice for student artists and I want to expose them to as much of it as possible.

Art making with clay supports personalized learning, sensory development, fine motor skills, self esteem, self expression, collaboration, problem solving skills, persistence and pride in a child.

Clay also has a well documented therapeutic quality that settles and calms children. Let them play with dirt! Dirt contains microbes that help kids become smarter. It also has natural anti-anxiety properties! My students face many issues created by elements out of their control. Working with clay will help them release their stress and create something positive with their own hands.
