My students love to learn and they love to read! Better yet, they love it when they have choices in where to sit while they learn. These students come from a variety of backgrounds: some from poverty, some from affluence, some with English being their second language, and others from split homes. Yet, they all come to us wanting to learn and are overjoyed when they get choices in their learning experience.
They love it when they get to curl up with a good book, they melt away into a land of imagination while writing stories, and they grasp onto all the wonderful facts when we take notes in science, and they would enjoy it even more with a choice of where to sit.
Our traditional public school is located in the heart of a subdivision, serving students in grades K-5. With a variety of needs being met from extended resource rooms to Honor Choir, our school does its best to meet the individual needs of all our students, build their curiosity, and strengthen their love of learning.
My Project
Our classroom is a place to learn, explore, and have choices in where our most successful learning will take place. Currently, we have wobbly stools, floor chairs, and regular desks with chairs. I would like to provide an area with a couch and ottoman stools to enhance our choices of where to sit and learn best.
The couch and ottoman stools will create an area that feels like a comfy nook, somewhere to go and learn, collaborate with peers, and have a choice in where students can sit in order to do their best learning.
When students have choices and are not forced into just one pathway, they are more open to learning, which is the entire goal in my room. You and I don't always pick the same chair, sofa, or spot in our house when we go to sit down, so why should we ask our students to pick just one chair, just one spot while they are working so hard to learn for almost eight hours a day.
I can't wait to see their excitement when they get to use these materials during read to self, math centers, literacy centers, and throughout our day of learning.
