My Students

My school is in a small town in Indiana near a large university. We have a culturally diverse school with many families coming from other countries, and I believe this makes our classroom incredibly special. My first graders are enthusiastic students who love to be challenged with hands-on activities and educational games in the classroom. Every child in my classroom loves to learn, and I incorporate a variety of learning strategies so that every child can reach their fullest potential.

My Project

First grade is the year students are expected to make the most significant progress in learning to read independently, and the best way to accomplish that is by having students read as much as possible! The problem? Sitting alone on the cold, hard floor in the reading corner is not very appealing!

Reading centers are a favorite part of my students day.

Our centers include reading yourself, reading to someone else, working on writing, word work with the weekly spelling skill, and listening to reading.

Reading centers are a time to move around the classroom and sit in a spot of their own choosing. Imagine how inviting it would be to have cozy seats to place around the room.

With only straight-back chairs at desks and the hard floor as seating, my students often avoid tasks that require a lot of sitting still, like independent reading practice. With your help, I can transform our reading corner into our room's most inviting spot by providing a comfy seating option.
