it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach in a 1st & 2nd grade contained classroom with the most amazing students that have been diagnosed with Autism. What I love most about my students is their beautiful minds, their sweet hearts, and their ability to learn-differently. This school community service project will provide not only my classroom, but each of our ASD classrooms from Pre-K-2nd grade with the Social Emotional Learning Book Set, which includes 2 hardcover books, "Little Red Door" and "Can You Touch Color?" The books will promote literacy, and social emotional literacy through rich and vibrant content and illustrations. Each class will also receive, My Felt Story of 6- Rainbow Wooden Peg Dolls with Emotions-Sensory Toys, and a Letter Tracing Sensory Pad. Our students will be able to engage with the rich literature provided by the hardcover books and the sensory toys encourage emotional literacy and development. They will be a great resource to accompany the book set. The Letter Tracing Sensory Pad will encourage students to practice letter formation on a sensory pad.
If they can't learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn."
—Dr. O. Ivar Lovaas
Our school has a program called the "Bobcat Buddies," it is comprised of students in the 4th-5th grades. For this project, our Bobcat Buddies would assist in organizing times and dates to go to our Pre-K-2nd Grade ASD classrooms to read the hardcover books, and encourage the students to identify their feelings with the doll sets. The “Bobcat Buddies” will be engaging in a very important school community service by reading and connecting with our school’s ASD classes. Being encouraged by examples of community service throughout our school, our ASD students will feel included, gain literacy through social emotional learning, and have the opportunity to communicate their emotions through sensory play!
