My Students

My students are in TK in West Adams, Los Angeles. TK stands from transitional kindergarten. They come into the year at only four years old which is such an exciting age with students that bring mixed interests, abilities, and goals. This year my students are learning to read, sing, and write the alphabet, some are advancing to read sight words and some books. We are working to count to twenty, learning to imitate sounds or hold a paintbrush. This age of students love to play outside, learn new games, and boogie to a sweet tune.

Our school aims to help students become social justice leaders who have a heart of empathy, a mind of consciousness, and a spirit of joy.

The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, collaborating in a group, and becoming autonomous leaders that follow rules because we see the value in them, not just because we are told to do so. We celebrate little wins together each day and big ones when those come along the way, which they always do!

My Project

While some of my students are learning their letters, others are already reading full books. Either way they need to develop a life long love of learning and reading while in our classroom. Moving from 4th grade to TK I have very few books that even include pictures for the kids to look at, let alone books they can read. We don't have a carpet or other furniture to make our library corner comfy and cozy, which is part of what makes reading so fun! I would like to have books will hold their interests and keep them reading in my classroom.

Struggling readers will never learn to love reading unless they are surrounded by literacy.

Helping students begin to learn that reading is fun is perfect way to build better readers. My students will love getting their hands on exciting and accessible books in a cozy library corner.
