Help me give my students a way to learn to the best of their ability. The teepee will give easily distracted students a way to block out what is around them while focusing on the teacher.
I currently co-teach in an inclusion classroom where 50% of our class is special education and the other 50% is general education. Our school is Title I and 2/3 of our students are on the free/reduced-rate lunch program. Many of our students come from single parent households and are enrolled in both before and aftercare programs.

My Project
How many of you remember how uncomfortable it was to sit on a hard chair at a desk for almost 6 hours a day while trying to concentrate on what your teacher was teaching? While so many aspects of our world have evolved, many classroom settings still feel like a one room school house. Our students are often labeled as the fidgety, easily distracted child who is below level when, in may instances, the child is just not comfortable in his or her learning environment.

By giving students a comfortable learning experience, we are inviting them to become comfortable in learning. We, as teachers, need to get out of OUR comfort zone! We need to stop seeing a classroom as 25 students sitting in chairs at desks, and start getting comfortable with students sitting on couches and bean bags, sitting in a tee-pee or tent, or even sitting on the floor with cushion seats. When a teacher is comfortable, she/he makes learning comfortable for each student in the class.
