Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students and students across the building have become such strong advocates for the things they need to see from their educators. In the past few months they have created a robust student council where they have made proposals to redo how we think about lunch as well as some of the other policies the school has. They have advocated for the learning platforms they think would be most beneficial to them. They have also advocated for spaces in the school where they can be themselves.
As a result of this advocacy I decided that I would give students that space.
A space where students can come to be authentically and unapologetically them.
My Project
I am looking to start an Affinity space with the students in my school. I teach at a school that is about 98% kids of color and our teaching or leadership teams are not reflective of that. So often times student feel as if they don't have a place where they can authentically be themselves.
The book that I want students to use, gives previously marginalized groups a voice.
A voice that is reflective of our school population. Students will use the short stories to support discussions in the Affinity group. Either in person or remote. An Affinity space will support student's mental health in this unprecedented time.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
