My students need 8 sleeping bags for weekend and week-long outdoor excursions. The students of the Camping Club are actively planning trips and need gear!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Camping club is comprised of enthusiastic students, many of whom have never spent a night outside of four walls. The students have already planned an overnight trip, and dream of taking one week-long backpacking trip. By the end of this year, my goal is for us to fulfill this dream.
Almost all of our students have grown up in New Orleans with little exposure to the rural areas or nature.
Our students are curious, diverse, and enthusiastic. Camping club students have come together to plan and execute overnight car camping trips despite a variety of emotional and academic needs.
My Project
Students will use the sleeping bags for overnight and multi-day camping trips. Students do not have access to sleeping bags or camping equipment at home. In the past, many of them have been cold on overnight trips using only blankets. The eight sleeping bags will keep students warm and enable camping club to take outdoor trips that last more than one night.
Research shows the countless benefits of outdoor experiences for urban youth.
The ability to take longer camping trips will enable our students to develop leadership capabilities, wilderness skills, environmental activism, and memories they will never forget.
