My fourth-grade students are a curious group who love discovering new things. This school year I am participating in a class to better serve my students in the area of science. The class is teaching me simple ways to incorporate STEAM, or Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics, into our classroom. Each morning when my students arrive, they turn in their homework and then are given some sort of work to keep them busy until the day starts.
By providing my students with STEAM challenges in the morning, I am hoping it will be an incentive to complete their homework each night and push their creative minds to keep reaching for the stars!
Many of my students (67%) receive free or reduced-rate lunch, but that statistic does not hold them back. They are eager to devour and love getting their hands on new knowledge. This incentive will help them in all areas to try their best and encourage them to never give up.
My Project
Every morning my students arrive to school and have 20-30 minutes of downtime before the day actually begins. While most choose to read, practice typing, or complete the busy work page for the day, I would love to offer more hands-on options.
By offering STEAM challenges for the students to complete, the students will get their brains fired up and running full-STEAM ahead!
I feel this will be a great motivational tool to encourage students to get their work done ahead of time so they can participate in the STEAM challenges each morning.
