What a sweet, curious group of second graders! These kids are something special. They come from a small town on the western slope of Colorado which affords them both the advantages and disadvantages of rural living.
These are kids who have an amazing amount of potential.
Being rural children, they know how to work hard, love to explore, and are enthusiastic about learning new things.
Then why aren't my students wild about reading? The answer is simple, these kids don't have adequate access to books. With no librarian on staff, a limited school library, and a meager and antiquated classroom library, getting "good fit" books into the hands of my students is challenging to say the least. Furthermore, only a few of my kids come from homes where parents will read with them. But, I feel certain that with access to high quality literature and a little encouragement, my kids would flip a switch. I believe my kids are wired to love reading. Help us create a classroom community that celebrates reading and learning!
My Project
Kids need books. It's that simple. My project asks for the most basic need in any classroom... BOOKS! Pete the Cat, Curious George, Henry and Mudge! These are just of a few of the books I've requested. Kids become great readers by reading lots of "good fit" books. As a teacher, your goal is to get kids to read as much as possible every day. When you have a rich classroom library, that "good fit" book is only an arm's length away.
By providing my students with a rich classroom library, you are inspiring them to become the great readers they are meant to be.
With your donation, you will provide my students with better access to quality literature, opportunities to share with their peers, and give them materials they will be motivated to read. These are bright kids who just need to see how exciting reading can be. Once they get going, I have no doubt they are going to soar.
