Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my students live in an urban, low-income city comprised largely of immigrant families. Many of our students speak a language other than English at home. Despite the challenges that they face, the students in our school are consistently eager to learn, and enthusiastic about new and exciting learning opportunities.
Our students are typically active children.
It is not in their nature to sit still for incredibly lengthy periods of time; yet they are often required to do just that. Students benefit from frequent movement breaks ("brain breaks") throughout the day to help them focus and do their best learning.
My Project
I am starting my 13th year in my district in a new position, as a Math Instructional Coach, working with teachers and students in grades 1-4. As a classroom teacher, I always used a variety of strategies to give my students movement breaks throughout the day. It is so important to give students a chance to be physically active throughout the day, even just a few minutes at a time, and it is is obvious that "brain breaks" for physical activity and exercise impact students' attention, motivation, and academic progress.
By far, GoNoodle has been my students' favorite movement resource!
The website provides hundreds of kid- and school-friendly videos that get kids running, jumping, dancing, stretching, and practicing moments of mindfulness. Using GoNoodle throughout the day allows teachers to easily incorporate movement breaks into their schedule--during transitions, during indoor recess, and even during lessons. GoNoodle provides fun, silly, and playful ways to get kids moving. In addition to the regular physical activity, added benefits include improved behavior and attention, gains in academic performance, and a stronger classroom environment.
I have previously used the free version of GoNoodle, and my students constantly begged me to subscribe to the Plus version that includes more videos and movement activities! My students love when it is their turn to choose the brain break video, and the whole class eagerly jumps up to participate and get their wiggles out! When they return to their work, they are more focused and alert.
With this schoolwide subscription, I can introduce teachers at my school to this amazing resource, and we can get all of our students moving throughout the day. GoNoodle Plus will allow teachers in my school to "take student engagement, behavior, and achievement to a whole new level with core-aligned physical activity breaks."
