This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Go out and play!" While you may have heard these words as a child, my students spend their hours in front of a TV. Help me create activity and movement at school! My students need equipment and access to a variety of fun activities to curb obesity, build confidence, and get ACTIVE!

My students are a group of incredible 4th graders who live in a low-income, urban setting in Southern California.

Many are from hard-working families with lower education levels, eager to support their child. My students' success is largely due to the use of proven teaching strategies that are effective for all learners, especially English language learners, a majority of our population. The other HUGE factor in their success is their motivation, and understanding that their learning is tied to life outside the classroom: past, present, and most importantly, future! My classroom is structured on the belief that all students deserve a quality education and can achieve. Unfortunately, we recently found out that our students have the highest Body Mass Index (BMI), an indicator of poor health, obesity and other risk factors. We are motivated to get our students healthy and active! We just need support getting the materials we need to make learning engaging and effective for all students!

My Project

We need tools to keep our bodies and minds active. P.E. is often the first to go during budget cuts. Luckily, my site values P.E., and we regularly set aside time in the academic schedule for movement and games. A few years ago, I acquired jump ropes and other supplies but I would love to get enough for all students to play at once! Students can work out daily with jump ropes, instead of standing around on the playground or waiting for their turn. The bouncing ball jumpers will make kids laugh and shout as they try to maintain balance while jumping around the playground and getting heart rates up! Hoops can be used to "hula" encouraging movement in hilarious challenges they will LOVE. The comet-tailed balls will allow activities that all students can participate in--even those with wheelchairs! The books focus on the importance of physical health, fitness, and taking care of ourselves; and laminate covers will ensure they last! The bins and bag will keep our supplies protected.

Obesity is an epidemic in America.

Having access to sports equipment and books about health and fitness allows my students to practice a healthier lifestyle, teamwork, and develop confidence as they enjoy activities they never knew existed! My students live in an area that is not always safe for them to play outside. School is the only place where some of them can get out and play. Thanks to YOU and Jamba Juice for helping me show these kids the importance, and fun, of having an active life.
