My students need class sets of the magazine Time for Kids, playground balls and jump ropes so they can learn more about nutrient-dense food and healthy lifestyles with their little buddies.
I teach an exciting, motivated, and creative group of fifth grade students. My student population is very diverse. I have some who are special needs students whoare working below grade level, while others need to extend their thinking and apply the skills they have mastered in meaningful ways.
My students enjoy coming to school each day and learning from each other.
They use their critical thinking skills to ask good questions and analyze information. They are creative and are excited to learn more about health and nutrition with their little buddies.
My Project
My students love to get together with their little buddies! At the end of each buddy session, I survey my kids and ask what they want to do next. Two answers are always mentioned. They want time to read with each other & they want to play outside together.
My students’ responses are how this kid-inspired project came to be.
I want to provide my students with the two materials they ask for each time.
I’ve asked for a classroom set of Time For Kids (TFK) for my students, and sets for our buddies. TFK is a magazine that features countries all over the world. In many issues the food and games of a culture are addressed. Reading TFK will allow our students to learn about nutrient-dense foods & games from cultures represented in our classrooms. The themes of TFK issues are often parallel, but in the upper grades the content is more specific. My students will use or TFKs to build background knowledge & will be able to answer questions when they read with their little buddies. TFK is a way for the students to learn about nutrient-dense foods and international games while reaching their goal of reading together.
To meet their request of playing outside together, I’m asking for jump ropes & playground balls. These will be used to teach their buddies how to play common games on the playground, along with the games we’ve read about it TFK.
This project increases peer-to-peer interactions, because my students will be mentoring the younger students as they teach them games to help them reach their goal of being active 60 minutes a day. With TFK reading, my students will help their buddies learn about nutrient-dense food & how to eat a balanced diet, while venturing out & trying something new.
