I teach English language arts to more than one hundred seventh grade students. Our school is a Title I school in rural South Carolina where a significant portion of students live below the poverty line.
My classes are composed of both high-achieving gifted and talented students, and struggling students who are often reading below grade level.
Each of these groups has very unique needs in order to be successful, and each group needs encouragement and guidance to reach their individual potential.
My Project
My students in Georgetown, South Carolina have often never left the state, let alone left the country. But it's important that these students get a global perspective and understand what life is like in other countries, and the struggles others face. By integrating the novel "I Will Always Write Back" into our curriculum I will be providing a whole new outlook to students who have never had the opportunity before. Using the novel, "I Will Always Write Back" students will learn about educational, cultural, economical, and medical norms in Zimbabwe, and how vastly they differ from life in America.
We need a set of the novel "I Will Always Write Back" and a novel guide to assist with differentiation.
This book will fit in perfectly with our Value of Work curriculum unit, and gives a unique perspective of schooling in another country. I think this book will be a valuable resource for my students and impact them on a deep level.
