Imagine coming to school and having to walk through the halls and then out the door to a brand new classroom in a portable. That is what my first graders do daily. Due to large numbers and an overflowing school, my students have been moved into a brand new first grade classroom this year in the portable. Over half of my students are tardy on a daily basis.
Even with all of that, these students are brilliant problem solvers, who enjoy art, science, and coding, and who push themselves daily to learn and build relationships.
They deserve every opportunity to not worry about their environment, supplies, and problems. I am allotted $200 a year to provide for them for the year, which doesn't go far.
My Project
These seats will allow students to wiggle while they learn. Many of my first graders have a hard time sitting still for long periods of time. I have one wobble stool in my classroom that they all get a turn to use but with 19 students it is not often enough.
Movement has been proven to be a factor that increases attention and general good health for all students, but especially those with ADHD.
My students can not go longer than 10 minutes without bouncing their legs, wiggling their legs, or tipping in their chairs.
I am trying to find flexible seating options for the first graders in the portable with limited room. Students have lap desks, clipboards, and stability cushions currently but there is not enough for each child. By allowing ALL students to have access, behavior and focus will improve for all students, which will lead to more learning.
