My Students

How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicate that students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group at our elementary school.

I serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.

The typical student in my class reads at a first grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and vocabulary. We are a Title I, low income school where we are working hard to close achievement gaps among our student population.

My Project

These books will help me to fill my classroom library with books tailored to meet my students' various reading levels. It will help during reading so the students can feel that sense of pride and success as they build such a critical skill. My goal is to build lifelong readers and I need high interest books at their level to do that.

By exposing them to texts at their level, I can make great gains with them in their literacy skills, reading comprehension and vocabulary building.

Dr. Seuss said, "The more that you read, the more things you will know; the more that you learn, the more places you'll go!" It is my hope that this year, every student in my classroom develops a passion for reading that will follow them for the rest of their life!
