Get Up & Move: Play Adapted Basketball!

Help me give my students who are preschoolers (typical & various disabilities) as well as our multiple disability school agers options to play basketball with the adapted basketball stand!

My Project

A variety of students in our integrated preschool classrooms, our functional resource preschool classrooms only have access to a climber, a balance beam and an average size basketball bucket. In addition to enriching preschoolers gross motor experience, this adapted hoop would also be available to 3 functional resource classrooms grades K-6. We serve students with a variety of physical, mental and intellectual diagnoses.

Basketball as a sport/activity focuses on eye-hand coordination, dynamic balance, teamwork , communication skills and large gross motor skills such as running, jumping, etc.

We currently have playground balls but actual basketballs are more functional when learning the skill of basketball. Basketballs are typically heavier in weight than a playground ball which will increase fine motor and hand manipulation skills.

Our student population is currently made up of 5 students who are primarily in a wheelchair, which provides access for them to play basketball. With our students ranging from ages 3-12, the adapted hoop that we are requesting also provides multiple heights for all students to be successful when making a basket.
