With video games, TV, I-pads, computers, students do not get enough physical activity. They also have little understanding of the geography of our country.
My students are mostly from families that are financially challenged, some with little to no encouragement outside of school.
Living in a small city, many have little opportunity to get physical activity outdoors. They come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, as we have a large immigrant population.
My Project
I am requesting the pedometers and a wall map so that we can chart our progress across the nation. It will also lead to many relevant activities in math, Ela, social studies, and science. They will be able to learn about distance measurement, geography, health and nutrition, etc.
I think this is important because many of my students are unable financially to participate in most sports.
In addition, the benefits of walking will help them academically and it is something they can continue after they leave my class.
