Get Students Engaged with a Small Library of Graphic Novels!

Help me give my students stories that will have them excited to pick up a book! Most students, when surveyed, said their favorite book series is Dog Man. I want to build on this interest in graphic novels.

My Project

I work with an After School Program where we allocate about an hour each day for students to complete homework and missing assignments. However, most days they don't arrive with work that needs to be done and must find another quiet academic activity to do, so as not to disturb students who are completing their work. I want students to know that reading can be a fun and relaxing option. I believe graphic novels are a great way to get students engaged in the stories they read, and as an artist, I love when students appreciate the hard work that goes into illustrating books.

These books will contribute to a library in the "cozy corner" of my classroom, where I hope students will change their perception about reading and view it as a comfort rather than another chore that needs to be done.

When surveying students in the past, many either gave no response or responded with "Dog Man." I would like them to expand their interests and have access to a variety of other books while also including this beloved series.

The cozy corner is a work-in-progress, currently populated with a bookshelf, comfortable seating, a television, and a cooking area, and students would benefit from having access to books that they can easily engage with and enjoy in a comforting environment. My goal is to have reading feel like a reward rather than a task—something you enjoy at the end of a long day in your favorite chair.
